What is OMM of OMT?

Established in the American frontier in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, Osteopathic Medicine or osteopathy sought the restoration of health from within. The body is a complex network of muscles, connective tissue, arteries/veins, nerves, and organs working together to help the body to survive and adapt to the environment around them. Disease, illness or injury occur due to multiple reasons, however the body isn’t working as well as it once did. Osteopathic physicians are in primary and numerous specialties, and use imaging, labs, and refer to other specialists as needed.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a medical specialty that uses osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as a tool to help the body compensate and heal itself. OMT is a gentle, hands-on treatment that is guided by a patient’s unique anatomy. OMT requires years of training in both medical school and residency to be able to sense the body’s bony landmarks, for example your hip bones, describe their orientation in reference to other body structures, and then tailor an effective treatment specific to the patient.
